A Raisin in the Sun Analysis

In Lorrane Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, the agon of the story is the question: is there nothing more to life than money? Throughout the story, Walter has to come in conflict with this question multiple times. It is clear that in the early stages of the play that he answered this question with a yes, saying to mother that “life was always about money.” And you can not blame him for thinking that way, under his circumstances you would come to the same conclusion too. However, when faced with the choice to sell the house he just bought because the people in the neighborhood do not like his skin color, he refused the offer, even with a big paycheck as a part of the deal. As he looks upon his family and thinks of his ancestors before him, he realizes that there is more to life than money, and one of those things is respect for the people you represent.
