Are You Optimistic?
Albert Camus once wrote “This is the truly tragic moment when the hero becomes conscious of his wretched situation.” In a world that is filled with despair and uncertainty, it is easy to feel hopeless when looking at it from a certain angle. However, like Albert Camus said, that is the point where we surrender ourselves to the world, and our lives have become the tragedy we thought the world to be. It would be ignorant of me to deny the state of this world, with the constant violence and war inflicted amongst humans. However, it is still worth holding your spirit within.
To focus on the negative aspects on earth will obviously drain your optimism. If you only think of the evil and wretchedness of the world, that's how you will see it. To see the effects of goodness and beauty by humans, just take a look outside. While walking and witnessing the beautiful creations humans have built, think of the passion and love it took to build these faculties.
The human condition of love is something that we all have inside all of us, and it is still prevalent within the world. Think about what brought your parents together, or what made your friends like you, or what made your teacher enjoy teaching you information. The human aspect of love is why you exist, why you are still here, why the bus driver let you in when you didn’t have enough money, why your classmate lend you a pencil when you needed it. Just know that you are loved.
Even a person unsatisfied with everything could find a sliver of optimism, enough to believe that life is worth living. With all that can happen in one's life, it is easy for them to become conscious of their situation and become depressed about the life they are living. The people that live the hardest lives feel like life is laughing at them, like some sick comedy. But there is still the ability, for within is an eternal everlasting joy. In Albert Camus’ essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Sisyphus is condemned by the Gods to roll a boulder up a mountain. When he does it rolls back down and he is forced to repeat the process. His actions are filled with difficulty and meaninglessness, however Camus interprets Sisyphus as loving the experience. He rebels against the pain and feeling to give up, instead enjoying it. In Camus’ words: “One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
So of course it is still worth holding onto your spirit. To focus on only the negatives is a very unhealthy and ignorant way to see the world, not only for the earth but for yourself. You have to realize that there is still an element of good within the world. And that the aspect of love is something valuable that you have received that will always receive as long as you live. Even within the hardships, the dark times, the most cruel the world inflicts upon us, is an unkillable joy within us. And besides, what example do you send if even in difficult moments you scorn against the pain and dare to live another day.
